Karez is a water conservancy system in the arid region of Xinjiang, where wells are connected by underground channels. The system collects large amounts of rainwater and snowmelt that seep into the ground in spring and summer, and brings it to the surface through the natural slope of the mountain. The rainwater is used to irrigate farmland and meet people’s daily water needs. Karez protects natural resources and the ecological environment by reducing evaporation of water from the surface which does little damage to the surface.
