“um…um… The first reason is that … that…you know… it’s because …”

1. 流畅不停顿,发音清晰没有歧义;

2. 逻辑清楚,说理有层次;

“Your friend wants to come to your country and what things do you suggest him doing or not doing to be polite and respectful ?”

第一招

Give a simple definition

It can be defined as …;

By …, people often mean that …;

What does it mean to…? I think it means that …

Politeness and respect, I think these two words required you to understand other’s expectation and try to satisfy it or at least make them believe that you really care.

第二招

Talk about your personality

I am one of those people who are quite traditional and even a little bit introverted. In fact, I always feel that I am no good at socialization and quite afraid of making mistakes the first time I go to a place. So in China, to show respect, people like me would often …

第三招

Describe a problem&offer a solution

The problem often lies in the fact that …

The biggest headache is …

… will have a hard time…

This problem could be solved if…

The solution might have something to do with…

The biggest headache for foreigners in China is that restaurants don’t always provide knives and forks. To solve this problem, the best way is not to take them with yo

u but to learn to use chopsticks.

第四招

Give a hypothesis

If you refused to use chopsticks, your sincerity would certainly be questioned and people might even question whether you respect their culture or not.

I suggest that my friend should learn to use chopsticks.

First, to show politeness and respect, I think you should understand other’s expectation and try to satisfy it. By this, I mean to mix into their lives. For example, I’m a traditional Chinese and even a little bit introverted. I think if you could live like a Chinese,it means that you respect my culture. Using chopsticks is a good way to fit into China as we even regard chopsticks as a culture symbol.

Second, one of the biggest headaches for foreigners in China is that restaurants don’t always provide knives and forks. To solve this problem, the best way is to use chopsticks. If you refused to use chopsticks, your sincerity would certainly be questioned and people might even question whether you respect their culture or not.
