【英语学习-college和university】

不同英语系国家对这两词的定义不同，这里主要从美式英语来做个大概的区别。

从叫法上，

一般说“上大学”，美语常用“go to college”来表达， 而不是“go to university”。

比如，My son has gone away to college. 我儿子上大学去了。

又如，

"Where did you go to college?"

"你在什么地方上的大学？"

"Ohio State University."---"俄亥俄州立大学。"

如果是本科生，不管是在college还是university上学，一般都叫做 college student.

如果是正在读硕士学位或更高学位的人，把他们叫做研究生/graduate student，grad student 或者 grad.

比如，

"I have been a college student for four years."

"我已经上大学四年了。"

"My friend Tom is a grad student at Ohio State University."

"我的朋友汤姆是俄亥俄州立大学的研究生。"

从规模上，

college 一般会小些，只提供学士学位的課程/Bachelor’s degree,没有研究院。

而university 就较大，多用于综合性大学，一般会包含多个学院（就直接用college表示了，比如 工程学院College of Engineering、外语学院 College of Foreign Languages）和研究院，提供研究生课程/graduate programs，学生可获得硕士或博士学位/ a Master's degree or Ph.D.，当然有些著名大学比如达特茅斯学院 Dartmouth College等，虽然是综合性大学，即university的规模，但仍沿用 college 的称呼。
